About the Author:
VAL BIRO's many books include The Donkey That Sneezed, The Magic Doctor, and Jack and the Robbers, all published by Oxford.
From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2-- With over 30 editions of this perennial favorite currently in print, an illustrator must make any new attempt so unique as to divert attention from the others. Unfortunately, such is not the case with this British import. Unlike James Marshall and Tony Ross, whose highly individualized brands of humor and illustrative style mark their versions as true stand-outs, Biro has added nothing significant to his retelling, either textually or visually, to warrant purchase of this book over any other equally inoffensive and lackluster version. The roly-poly pigs, depicted as innocent rubes, fall to the Disney side of the barnyard. However, bravo to Biro for adhering to tradition in that the pesky wolf is destroyed rather than merely scared away, as has been the case in more "gentle" renderings. Biro's most singular contribution to this centuries-old title is the Where's Waldo? touch of hiding the wolf in every picture (a not-too-subtle prompt is provided on the back cover for the less observant). Nothing sets it apart--buy multiple copies of Galdone, Marshall, and others while you still can. --Dorothy Houlihan, White Plains Public Library, NY
