About the Author:
Val Biro was born in Budapest in 1921 and was educated at the school of Cistercians there. In 1939, he came to England to study art at the Central School of the Arts in London. After that, he worked in book publishing while developing his own style of art and illustration. By 1953 he gad enough private work to give up employment and has operated as a freelance illustrator ever since. He has illustrated over 150 books.

Grade 2-3 The familiar story, "The Table, the Ass and the Stick," is rewritten as the equivalent of a beginning reader. The choppy, crudely written text has little of the style or the humor of the Grimm version in Wanda Gag's More Tales from Grimm (Coward, 1947; o.p.) or the Jacobs' variant in English Fairy Tales (Dover, 1898) . What humor the book does have comes from the cartoonish illustrations. They are pen-and-ink drawings with color washes and have a certain gruff vitality.
