Julia Clarke was born in Surrey, England, but spent most of her childhood in Germany and Canada. After leaving school at 16, her love of books led to work in a library. After A levels, she gained a Certificate of Education at Goldsmiths College, University of London. A post-graduate course
in drama at the Guildford School of Acting was followed by work in all branches of the theatre including writing and performing educational shows in schools. In between acting jobs she travelled to Afghanistan and India, worked for an astrologer and as a cook on a Scottish island. While appearing
