Making Music is an invaluable practical resource for all instrumental and singing teachers. It will ensure that you make the most of every minute of lesson time and gives you the necessary tools to develop a student's musicianship to the full. Making Music presents 200 accessible and imaginative activities to improve students' musical understanding and aural awareness. Subjects include warming up, pulse and rhythm, basic musical elements such as harmonic progression, scales, melody, improvising, and composing. Some less tangible aspects of music-making, such as musical character and expression, are also explored. Suitable for both group and individual lessons, and for students at all stages, Making Music provides a refreshingly practical approach to developing the whole musician.

About the Author:
Patricia M. Gane has enormous experience of working in music education. A string player, pianist, and conductor, she has earned a national reputation for her skills in training instrumental and class teachers. As an Ofsted inspector, she has observed and reviewed a wide range of instrumental and clkass teaching, from individual lessons and ensembles to post-graduate university courses. She has contributed articles on all aspects of musical education to several publications, among them Music Teacher and the British Journal of Music Education.
Review:
The seven chapters provide thorough, practical, clear examples and exercises suitable for teaching both individuals and, in many cases, groups. For teachers accustomed to working only with individuals, the prospect of teaching groups of children can be daunting - this publication could prove an invaluable resource. One of the keys to its success is its logical, sequential presentation and focus on the 'building blocks' of music and playing. . . All of the 200-plus activities will prove useful, indeed often invaluable, to a teacher willing to take the time to explore them. * Matthew Jones, Music Teacher, September 07 *
