This sophisticated and moving plea for freedom and democracy in the Third World is an important and stimulating book. McCord analyzes as case studies such countries as India, Egypt, Indonesia, the Chinese People's Republic, Japan, Ghana, and Bolivia, and endeavors to refute the claims to superiority of highly centralized and coercive one-party regimes in achieving economic development, consensus, and national unity. Furthermore, he takes a highly skeptical view of the claim that such "dictatorships of the left" are evolving new forms of grass-root democracy more suited to local conditions than the liberal Western model. No doubt, many readers will find his arguments convincing, if only because they broadly share the author's values, and because the author effectively uses his sociological skills and his extensive cross-cultural experience in his political analysis.
