In this new translation of Euripides' celebrated Greek tragedy, W.S. Merwin and George E. Dimock, Jr. offer a compelling look at the devastating consequence of 'man's inhumanity to man'. Based on the conviction that only translators who write poetry them-selves can properly recreate the celebrated and timeless tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series offers new translations that go beyond the literal meaning of the Greek in order to evoke the poetry of the originals.
About the Author
W.S. Merwin is the author and translator of many books of poetry. His Selected Poems was published in 1988. He was named 2010-2011 Poet Laureate.
George E. Dimock, Jr., now retired, was Professor of Classical Languages and Literature at Smith College.
