9780195025668: The Anticancer Drugs

Synopsis

This text offers an up-to-date review of the field of cancer chemotherapy, including some of the new approaches to biological treatments of cancer and potential targets for new drug design. A detailed description of the pharmacology, mechanisms of action, toxicity, resistance mechanisms, and clinical usefulness of each class of drugs is given. The authors emphasize concepts involved in determining the mechanism of action and development of resistance, the determinants of drug responsiveness to chemotherapeutic agents, and a rationale for their clinical use in various types of cancer.

The text is organized in a way that makes it easy for the reader to conceptualize how drugs work and categorize them by their mechanism of action. It facilitates an understanding of the rationale for chemotherapy with respect to the biology of the cancer cell and to tumor growth kinetics. Drawing on the fields of authors draw on the fields of medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and clinical medicine, this timely book is extensively referenced and provides a historical background for the development of each class of drugs.

Review

From reviews of the first edition: "[Contains] a great deal of clinically useful information. In addition, it has an excellent discussion of the biochemical mechanisms of each drug....An excellent introductory text for use in the classroom." --Drug Intelligence and Clinical Pharmacy

"The strength of the book lies primarily in its superb organization and clarity, and in its accurate, up-to-date review of the information on each agent....I recommend this book highly as an excellent addition to the libraries of practicing medical oncologists and clinical hematologists, and
especially physicians in specialty training." --New England Journal of Medicine

"One of the best written summaries of this type during the past 2 decades" --Journal of Medicinal Chemistry

"Excellent integration of the proposed mechanism of action of the agent, its uses against specific tumor types, and toxicity of the agent in humans. . . . Few texts have achieved such a complete description of all major agents." --Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

"Concise, up-to-date, and comes highly recommended. . . Also extremely useful in introducing interested scientists and physicians to the field of cancer chemotherapy. . . . The book is rich in structures, metabolic pathways, and diagrams illustrating the complexity of the use of drugs in the
treatment of neoplastic disease. This reviewer highly recommends this book as being very informative in a fast-moving field." --The Alabama Journal of Medical Sciences

"This book provides a concise review of the biochemical mechanisms of action, resistance, and development of the substances that are currently being used to make the treatment of cancer a reality. . . . Recommend(ed)." --New Physician

"Straightforward clarity. . . . provides a lucid explanation of the mechanisms of action of drugs that prevent cancer growth and links the biological behavior of cancers with the strategies used to overcome them clinically." --Margaret S. Dordal, MD, PhD (Northwestern Univ Med Sch), Doody's
Journal

"A concise up-to-date review of cancer chemotherapy....The unique niche of this text is that it is concise and affordable, with a style that allows a student or a new practitioner in the field of oncology to gain rapidly a firm understanding of the concepts and rationale of cancer
chemotherapy....Serves as a concise, well-organized, integrated source for cancer chemotherapy pharmacology." --The Annals of Pharmacotherapy
