The second edition of Evaluating Social Science Research serves a timely purpose by addressing the ever-important need of students and all readers to develop critical thinking skills. The authors have added new sections to the book in order to make it representative of new developments in the field over the 16 years since the appearance of the first edition. There is, to begin with, an explicit discussion of quasi-experimental research design, including an added distinction between equivalent-group and nonequivalent-group experiments. New are the explanations of the logic of multiple regression analysis, causal modeling, and meta-analysis.
The text revolves around the central ideas "statement of fact", defined as a statement that can be confirmed by sensory observation or sensing technology, and "scientific evidence", which refers to claims that are both concretized in their abstractions (usually with operational definitions) and that rely on observations that may be repeated and confirmed by other researchers. The authors believe that the approach remains essential for achieving scientific knowledge.
