Doing Right: A Practical Guide to Ethics for Medical Trainees and Physicians is a concise and practical guide to ethical decision-making in medicine. The text is aimed at second- and third-year one-semester ethics courses offered in medical schools, health sciences departments, and nursing programs. By taking an applied approach rather than a theoretical approach, this text serves the needs of medical and nursing students, residents, and practicing physicians by sorting through questions of moral principles relevant to the diverse and growing number of healthcare professionals. The many topics covered include truth telling, refusal of treatment, assisted suicide, managing error, and reproductive choice.

About the Author:

Philip C. Hébert is a family physician at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He currently chairs the Research Ethics Board and acts as a bioethics consultant for the hospital. In addition, he is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Toronto.

"I would be thrilled as a medical student to have it as a guide. It combines theory and practice really well. I also like the way the authors personality and views come through. It makes the material seem much 'nearer' to other clinicians' and students' experiences. The cases are great and the psychological depth of the communication and decision making described is immaculate." --Dr Pier Bryden, Assistant Professor and Faculty Lead, Ethics and Professionalism, Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children

"Dr. Hebert's straightforward and logical approach to explaining nebulous ethical dilemmas makes Doing Right an accessible book to all healthcare practitioners...Thus, the book is excellent in interweaving ethical principles with pertinent case studies and explanations. Furthermore, the second edition incorporates new advances in the field of medicine, such as reproductive rights, professionalism, and error management. Doing Right provides a comprehensive discourse on major ethical issues that healthcare professionals will encounter in everyday practice. This book should definitely be on the reading list for all medical practitioners and trainees desiring a concise and easy-tounderstand guide to ethics." --Review in the University of Toronto Medical Journal, Volume 86, Number 3, May 2009

"This outstanding introdution to ethical complexities using myriad cases to illustrate the complexity of ethical reasoning" --Dr Mona Gupta, Toronto, ON in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Sept 21, 2010, 182:1454
