Designed to show that differences among men and women are more significant than the differences between them, this collection of classic and contemporary essays provides a detailed, engaging, and altogether current study of gender. Using the biological arguments surrounding gender as a starting point, the collection leads readers through an examination of gender's cultural and social constructions; the interconnections between gender and the body, sexuality and violence; and the impact of gender on relationships, family, media, the classroom, and the workplace. Focusing on Canadian themes and scholars, The Gendered Society Reader, second Canadian edition, is a comprehensive and timely volume for studying gender in this country.

Amy Kaler, Canadian adapter of The Gendered Society Reader, is assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta. Her research interests focus on power, identity, culture, structure, and individual agency, and how gender intersects with these factors. Specifically she is interested in the organization of fertility, sexuality, and human reproduction and what they reveal about how gender, identity, and power are constructed in a particular time and place and what kinds of structures place constraints on women's and men's life choices. She has been published in several journals and in 2004 received the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts Research Award in acknowledgement of her 'extraordinary accomplishment in research at the assistant professor level'.
