Synopsis
Bringing together short stories that have Muslims and intercommunity relationships in the Indian subcontinent as their subject, this anthology includes India's most sensitive and thought-provoking writers from across various Indian languages and eras: from the prolific and compassionate Saratchandra to the social realist Prem Chand; from the bold and controversial Ismat Chughtai to contemporary writers like Shama Futehally. Including a variety of writers with distinctive styles, all of whom are widely read and have made significant contributions, this collection is an important work both in terms of literary value and also as a social document.

About the Author
Mushirul Hasan is Director General, National Archives of India, New Delhi. A Padmashree awardee, he is former Vice Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. He has held visiting professorships at the Universities of Rome, Virginia, Hungary, and at the Maison Des Sciences De L'Homme, Paris, as well as the International Institute of Languages and Civilizations, INALCO, Paris.
