Synopsis
Analyzing the moral confusion of contemporary society, this book relates three secular moral theories--scientific, romantic, and liberal humanism--with a variety of views on human nature and the human predicament. Influential though these theories are, argues Mitchell, they fail to do justice to the Western ethical tradition at its best--to the demands of the traditional "Christian" conscience.
