The impact of freedom of contract in the 19th century extended far beyond the legal arena as an economic slogan and an ethical attitude. Atiyah traces the development and subsequent decline of the freedom of contract, depicting its effects on the law's development and the foundation of contractual obligations, as well as its broader implications for 19th century English life.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A very good copy of the scarce first edition. Binding is tight and the text is pristine: unmarked. Jacket is remarkably fresh, with a few unobtrusive nicks on the front flap fold. There is a 1/2" intact tear on the rear jacket panel at the base of the spine seam. The interior of the jacket is slightly foxed on the rear panel, and this has resulted in some discoloration along the edge of the rear blue cloth binding. Jacket is diagonally clipped at the base of the front flap fold. All in all a stunning copy. Seller Inventory # 000683
