Synopsis
The European Covention on Human Rights (ECHR) covers a wide range of human rights protection: from a prohibition on torture through to, for example, the medical treatment of transsexuals. Individuals are increasingly complaining of human rights violations to the Strasbourg institutions. This text offers a highly readable yet scholarly analysis of both the procedure and the substance of the Convention.

Clare Ovey is a Legal Officer with the European Court of Human Rights, Strasbourg. Robin C. A. White is Dean of Law at the University of Leicester and co-editor of the European Law Review.
