The aim of this book, and its associated computer disk, is to explain the physical nature of electric and magnetic fields encountered in electrical engineering. Field problems are inherently difficult because fields are distributed in space and can exist in a vacuum devoid of matter as well as in solid material. The customary approach to field problems is through algebraic methods and the solution of equations. This book emphasizes instead a method, based on geometry, which enables the student to visualize the fields. Backed by a computer program giving visual displays, the method enables the student to attempt real problems and to use design methods. A comprehensive survey of numerical and analytical methods is provided, and examples of engineering applications are discussed.

Professor [P.] Hammond is Honorary Research Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southampton.
'The explanation of the finite element is particularly lucid, and will reward the interested reader, but it is probably too detailed for an undergraduate text.'
Times Higher Education Supplement
`The object of this book is first to stimulate the reader's imagination by helping him to acquire a vocabulary of electromagnetic terms ... Once the vocabulary has been acquired the language of electromagnetism can be learned by its use in engineering applications. The second aim of the work
is to guide the reader in the use of electromagnetic terms and relationships. The emphasis is on understanding and practical applications with the mathematical formulations presented in the simplest possible way.'
L'Onde Electrique - Septembre/Octobre 1994 - Vol. 74 - No. 5
`This highly recommended book and its associated disk give a clear insight to engineering electromagnetism. From this base the authors develop an effective introduction to computational electromagnetics and a stimulating discussion of pracical applications ... greatly enhanced by a menu-driven
tubes and slices (TAS) computer program provided on disk with it ... With its emphasis on the visualization of fields, backed by a user-friendly computer program, it will prove indispensable for teachers and students of the subject alike.'
