Pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators have moved out of the tertiary referral centers and are now routinely implanted in many large general hospitals. This book is designed for the general cardiology trainee at the beginning of their pacing career to act as an aid as they start implanting, whether they are in electrophysiology, devices, or general cardiology. Others who would find this book useful include the cardiac technician, who would be involved in the device implantation and follow-up.

This book is an easy access pocket book to refer to for queries regarding programming, trouble-shooting and patient concerns. The book includes a helpful section on important and helpful tips, and is written in the successful Oxford Handbook format.

About the Author:
Dr. Jonathan Timperley studied medicine at the University of Leeds, before undertaking his specialist training in cardiology in Oxford. His sub-specialty interest is pacing devices and heart failure. During his time in Oxford he completed an MD in the field of echocardiographic assessment of
cardiac disease. Paul Leeson studied medicine at St. Andrews and Cambridge before moving to Oxford for specialist training in cardiology. His sub-specialty interest is in cardiovascular imaging. While in Cambridge he completed an MB/PHD programme and, during early clinical training undertook
post-doctoral research at University College London. He is now a British Heart Foundation Fellow at the University of Oxford with a clinical research programme that uses ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging to study the development of cardiovascular disease. He is co-author of three Oxford
Specialist Handbooks in Cardiology covering echocardiography, pacing and angiography.
Dr. Andrew Mitchell is Consultant Cardiologist in Jersey, Channel Islands and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Dr. Mitchell has special interests in non-invasive imaging, with particular expertise in transoesophageal and intracardiac echocardiography. His
other interests include the role of device therapy for arrythmia management. Dr. Mitchell is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC).
Dr. Timothy Betts is a Consultant in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. His areas of expertise include general cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac devices (including pacing, implantable defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy) and
ablation of arrhythmias. Dr. Betts graduated from Birmingham University Medical school in 1991 and trained in Cardiologuy in Southampton and the Wessex Region. He was awarded his Doctorate of Medicine by Southampton University in 2003, supported by the British Cardiac Society International Research
Fellowship. In 2001-2002 he completed a Fellowship in Adult and Paediatric Electrophysiology at Northwestern University and the Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago. His research interests include the pathogenesis and ablation of atrial fibrillation.
Review:

"[T]his book represents excellent value for money. Its biggest virtue is the fact that everything is written as bullet points or short concise paragraphs. And in true Oxford Handbook fashion, each pair of adjoining pages covers one topic and one topic only. This allows very thorough indexing, so finding what information you want is quick and easy. The quality of information is also very comprehensive and virtually all topics are covered. It even manages to explain pacemaker timing cycles and algorithms with such simplicity, one wonders why one was ever in doubt in the first place...All pacing clinics should have a copy, and any device trainee, be they physiologist or doctor, would be advised to grab one, too."--Dr. Munmohan Virdee, Consultant Cardiologist, Papworth Hospital, Cambridge U.K.
