Synopsis

The object of this work is to provide a useful collection of sources on human rights in the form of a handbook. The author believes that the service provided by the present collection of materials is not equally well-provided by existing publications. The introductory notes to the treaties and conventions reprinted in this volume give only a general indication of the number of States which have signed the various agreements or which have become parties by ratification or accession. Signature does not normally make the signatory State a party but indicates a provisional intention to become a party. The ten sections are titled thusly: Fundamental Rights in National Legal Systems ~ Standard-Setting by the United Nations Organization ~ Implementation and Standard-Setting in Conventions Sponsored by the United Nations ~ Contribution of the International Labour Organization ~ Contribution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization ~ European Institutions and Conventions ~ Latin American Developments ~ Developments in Africa and Asia ~ The Concept of Equality ~ Trade and Development. It is hoped that this collection will be of help to a variety of readers and not merely to those with specialist interests in political science, international relations, or law.

Review

"Although there are a number of books containing the vast array of international and regional human rights treaties and instruments, this text has always been and remains the most comprehensive and coherent collection." Steve Foster, Coventry University, The Law Teacher, Volume 41 Number 1
