About the Author

U.R. Ananthamurthy (1932-2014) was a distinguished Kannada writer and public intellectual. He was honoured with the Jnanpith Award in 1994.

Chandan Gowda is Professor of Sociology at the School of Development, Azim Premji University, Bengaluru. He is presently completing a book on the cultural politics of development in old Mysore state.
