The York Corpus Christi cycle is the oldest and best-known of the English mystery cycles, and its depth and scope are reflected in the selection of twenty-two pageants offered in this volume. Included are plays on the Creation, the Fall of Man, the Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ, and the Last Judgement. The Passion sequence has been expanded by six of the eight plays generally attributed to the great poetic dramatist known as the York realist; this is the only edition of these works available in paperback, and the only volume to offer modern spelling throughout. Including detailed notes and a general introduction, this is the perfect source for students of medieval music, drama, and literature as well as actors participating in revivals of these famous plays.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

About the Author:
Richard Beadle is University Lecturer in English and Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge. Pamela King is Head of the Department of English at St Martins College, Lancaster.
Review:
"This edition benefits from detailed notes and an introduction which examines the history of the mystery plays and discusses the immensely popular modern productions in York and elsewhere."

--Richard Foster, Yorkshire Evening Press 23/11/1995

"Here in OUP's World Classic series we are presented with 22 of them written in modern style, making them more readable. The selection gives a good idea of what these plays were all about."

--Bill Spence, Yorkshire Gazette and Herald 22/07/1996

Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This volume offers 22 of the central pageants which make up York's famous Corpus Christi cycle. The York cycle is the oldest and best-known of the English mystery cycles, and its depth and scope are reflected in the selection printed here. The shape of the cycle was governed by subject matter of enduring spiritual significance, both to its contemporary audience and in later literary and artistic tradition, and the selection reflects these concerns. Included areplays on the Creation, the Fall of Man, the Incarnation, Passion, and Resurrection of Christ, and the Last Judgement. The Passion sequence has been expanded by six of the eight plays generallyattributed to the great poetic dramatist known as the York Realist: the authentic text of these plays is not otherwise available in paperback. As well as providing detailed annotation, this edition offers an introduction which examines the history of the cycle and discusses the immensely popular modern productions in York and elsewhere. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Eachaffordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes toclarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more. This volume is the only paperback to offer the main body of the plays which make up York's famous Corpus Christi cycle. The selection here emphasises the scope of the oldest and best-preserved of the English Mystery cycles, and the modern spelling, detailed notes, and general introduction make the volume particularly useful for both readers and actors.
