Synopsis

Are "deviant" and "criminal" behaviors inherently wrong or evil? Taking an innovative cross-cultural approach, Deviance Across Cultures: Constructions of Difference, Second Edition, spans the globe to give instructors and students an invaluable--and affordable--resource for investigating the social construction of deviance. From studies on sex and drugs to examinations of religious and corporate deviance, this anthology responds to the growing need for global learning in deviance studies.

About the Author

Robert Heiner is Professor of Sociology at Plymouth State University. He is the author or editor of several books, including Social Problems: An Introduction to Critical Constructionism, Fourth Edition (OUP, 2012), and Conflicting Interests: Readings in Social Problems and Inequality (OUP, 2009).

Review

"The advantage of this book is the comparative angle, and adding more selections improves its appeal. This approach has immense potential."--Phillip W. Davis, Georgia State University

"The last time I taught Deviance I used the first edition of this book. My students loved it. I like it because the articles are very current, and because of the cross-cultural focus. This text generates discussions, curiosity and explorations into the variety of ways groups can create reality. I will adopt the new edition."--Kim Fendley, Shenandoah University

"Reading about Deviance should be a fascinating experience, it should immediately grab students' attention, stimulate their interest and make their jaws drop a bit. I believe the readings in the new edition will do just that."--Risa Garelick, Northern Arizona University

"This book's greatest contribution is its emphasis on cross-cultural studies of deviance. No other undergraduate-level deviance textbook utilizes this approach."'--Nicholas L. Parsons, Eastern Connecticut State University
