Who's a pretty boy then? "If they say that to me once more, " grumbles Peter the blue budgie, "I shall fly away!" And that's exactly what he does.
Julius the house sparrow thinks he's mad to want to leave his safe, comfortable cage, with all meals provided, and fly out into the big wide world, but he's a good friend and promises to help.
Peter finds the world a very strange place, full of dangers he'd never imagined. He soon learns that not everyone likes budgerigars and that for some, he's just a tasty meal. He has to sleep where he can and eat what he finds. But Julius and his brother Benjy are there, and he makes lots of new friends -even an owl. Peter's not just a pretty face either. He can talk like a human and this saves him from many a bad situation. He says "Give us a kiss!" to a rook who's about to eat him and the other birds immediately fall about with laughter. Peter is no longer lonely, but sometimes there's a wistful look in his eyes. . .
Then one day, he looks through a window and sees a green budgie singing happily in a cage. That's when he decides enough is enough. The world is very exciting but, after all, he is a budgie. . .
