In writing this text for Continental Classroom's television course in Probability and Statistics, the authors have tried to keep before them the needs of a person studying largely by himself. Consequently, we include more than the usual number of worked-out examples, we rarely skip steps in mathematical development, and we devote considerable space to the discussions of ideas. The authors have two basic objectives: the first is to acquaint the reader with the theory of probability - the mathematics of uncertainty; and the second is to illustrate some applications of probability to statistical theory.
