From the Author

I wrote this just after I left the Saturday Evening Post, where I had been managing editor of the Country Gentleman magazine.  I was full of memories of the country when I was a boy.  When I arrived in California, a friend's daughter was fascinated by my stories of growing up in rural Indiana, in a very "old fashioned" way, so I decided to write the book for her.  Since it was published, many people have contacted me about the book.  I've decided to rewrite it and publish it again so that it will be available for younger readers.  The life depicted in the book will never been seen in this country again.
