Synopsis

Programming the Internet with Java is designed to teach students how to program in Java - in particular those concepts that relate to the burgeoning arena of Internet technologies. It assumes previous knowledge of programming in a procedural language such as C or Pascal, and begins with an introduction to Java and the basics of object oriented programming. It progresses onto classes, exceptions, libraries and threads and teaches the skills to develop complex Java code. Further chapters then go on to apply these lessons to Internet programming requirements so that by the end of the book, the student will be familiar with the fundamentals of network programming and database access as well as skilled at developing applets and applications. Features: * Numerous programming examples drawn from appropriate Internet technologies such as firewalls, log files and web crawlers * Self assessment questions guide the student through the book and measure progress * Boxed-out definitions of important Internet concepts * Teaching material (slides and solutions) available online. Supporting web site is available for downloading and contains code, exercises (available shortly), multiple choice self-assessment test applets, Java 1.1 updates and links to other useful sites. 0201175495B04062001

From the Inside Flap

PREFACE This book is intended for students studying a course on Java within a University or College. Typically such a course would form a second or third year module in a computing, computer science, electronics or telecommunications degree. In the book we take you from the fundamentals of Java to the point where you will be able to develop some very sophisticated software indeed, for example multi-threaded, client-server software and threaded applets. The book is split up into a number of sections based on chapters. The first three chapters form an introduction to Java and the concept of object-oriented programming. If your background is that of procedural programming in languages such as C or Pascal, then it is worth your while reading these chapters carefully. However, if you have encountered object-oriented languages before then you can either miss out this part of the book or skim read it. Chapters 4 to 10 teach the elements of Java. It will provide you with enough skills to develop the most complex Java code. The remainder of the book mainly covers the application of Java to applets (programs which can be embedded in Web documents) and Java applications. An appendix containing a description of the Java Development Kit concludes the book. There are a number of elements in this book which you may not have found in any other that you have read. First, in order to make the book suitable for self-study we have written a number of exercises and self-assessment questions (SAQs). The former involve quite a bit of thought and are substantial pieces of work normally involving the development of code. The latter are short questions which test that you have understood the concepts we have just written about. These SAQs are either short, sharp questions which require a written answer, or require you to write some short section of code. If you want to be notified whenever there is an important addition to the Web site such as extra exercises or further teaching material on the JDK 1.1 please email Darrel Ince at D.C.Ince@open.ac.uk We have also included a number of boxes which describe Internet concepts. Normally the boxes will precede some code or an exercise or SAQ which requires knowledge of the concept.
