Students make tile patterns (square and triangular numbers, multiples and powers of 2) and describe how they change. They collect and express data about time and distances along a straight line with number tables, graphs, and written stories; distinguish between cumulative distance and distance between steps to identify correspondences between number tables, graphs, and stories; use Trips downlodable software to represent their steps with a meter stick and Cuisenaire rods; reflect on step size and frequency; and compare graphs of position or step size with time. Suggested pacing: 16 sessions.
