This book was written to complement the material in a standard "concepts and issues" OS textbook. It is a textbook for undergraduate students, NOT a technical reference book for professional programmers. The ACM/IEEE course recommendation for undergraduate OS identifies core concepts that should be included in an OS course, and additionally describes a number of lab exercises to accompany such a lecture course. This lab manual provides a dozen OS-oriented exercises that require the student to have a substantial understanding of the OS organization in order to solve them. However all of the exercises can be solved with user-space programs -- they all use the Win32 API that is implemented by Windows NT Version 4 and Windows 2000.

The book has been classroom tested, and reviewed by a number of students, instructors, and Microsoft employees. When it is purchased as a bundle with my concepts textbook, each student also receives a copy of Windows NT Version 4 and Visual C++.

If undergraduate students and instructors wish to experiment with the Windows NT/2K kernel by writing user space programs, the exercises in this book will guide them through exercises that begin with relatively easy tasks, and which culminate in programs that are logically equivalent to interrupt handlers and device drivers.
