In recent years, there has been an explosion of activity in the design of standards for computer communications and networking and in the implementation of these standards. All this effort has been in the context of the open systems interconnection (OSI) model.

The OSI model has proved its value in the definition of protocols and services for distributed processing among computers, workstations and terminals. In addition, this model has provided the framework for the definition of new network services and technologies, including ISDN, broadband ISDN, the IEEE 802 and FDDI LAN standards, and the IEEE 802.6 MAN standard. More recently, this model has been the foundation for developing standards for interoperable network management and network security facilities.

Despite all this activity, the deployment of OSI products has been slow in coming. But now, a recent emphasis on the standardization of OSI implementation is fast bringing OSI to the commercial marketplace. The OSI conformance testing standards and the international standardized profiles (ISPs) are the long-awaited ingredients that make interoperable OSI products a practical reality.
