Business application systems are subject to continual change. Fundamental causes for this include new and expanding requirements for functions, as well as the breakneck speed of progress in hardware and software technology. This book, now in its fourth edition, aims to lay the foundation needed for a discussion of the technology of business application systems. It further aims to deepen this discussion by presenting concrete examples from the SAP R/3 System. The book is based on the R/3 release series 4.x. I received support from all sides in putting together this new edition. Many thanks to Claudia Jansen-Niedermeier, Karl Kessler, and Dr Herbert Schuster, who contributed selected chapters to this book. I would also like to thank many readers and my colleagues at SAP for providing valuable discussions, comments, and advice. Finally, thank you to the excellent translator, Audrey Weinland, and the publisher, Addison-Wesley, for their ever-cooperative collaboration. Dr Rdiger Buck-Emden November, 1998
