Psychologist Talmon ( Single-Session Therapy , Jossey-Bass, 1990) believes that the traditional long-term forms of psychotherapy should be the exception rather than the rule and that therapy should be as brief and solution-focused as possible. He effectively argues that, in most cases, mental health can be regained in a shorter (often single-session), less frightening, and less expensive type of therapy. Talmon also includes recommended readings and useful information for the novice on how to choose a therapist (for long- or short-term therapy), how to evaluate sessions, explanations of the different schools of therapy, and instances when long-term therapy might be appropriate. This book will certainly appeal to those who are intimidated by the idea and cost of traditional psychotherapy. Recommended for public libraries.
