Maria Langer has written more than 20 computer books. She also writes for MacWEEK, MacAddict, NetProfessional, FileMaker Pro Advisor, and Computer User. She is a consultant, Webmaster, computer trainer, and regular speaker at Macworld Expo.
Mac OS 8 Visual QuickStart Guide is a fully illustrated, step-by-step guide to Mac OS 8. Written for any level of Mac OS 8 user, it provides information about installing, configuring, and customizing Mac OS 8 features; using the Finder, applications, and utilities; working with PC files; printing; networking and telecommunications; accessing the Internet; using a PowerBook; and getting help. The book, which is nearly 300 pages long, includes hundreds of illustrations, a cross-referenced listing of new features, and an illustrated guide to Finder menus and shortcut keys. An online addendum, includes additional details specifically for Mac OS 8.1 users.
Both of these books are about the new Macintosh operating system upgrade, OS8. Folks who have already been using the Mac will find Langer's book more useful because the "New Features" section at the front gives them all they will want. For the complete beginner, either book will be useful, but Baldwin's book provides more hand-holding. Basic though they are, these could well be the most important Mac books you will be buying this season, so consider multiple copies.
