The Internet Users' Reference provides a basic introduction to the Internet with sections on using email, Web browsers and searching for information. It also contains more advanced sections for those developing Web sites and needing advice on topics such as standards, security and the use of multimedia. Others services provided via the Internet are also covered, for example videoconferencing and collaborative tools.

The Internet Users' Reference is produced by TERENA (Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association) for the user community of its member academic and research networks. Though primarily intended for Internet users and user support staff in this community, it is made freely available via the World Wide Web to encourage and facilitate network use.Background

The Internet Users' Reference was originally produced by EARN (European Academic and Research Network) under the title of Guide to Network Resource Tools, or GNRT. Printed as a booklet and registered in the Internet Engineering Task Force's FYI series, it became a very popular guide for end-users and support staff on using the Internet. In 1996 an update of the GNRT was started by EARN's successor, the Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association (TERENA), which resulted in a completely new version, written for the Web, covering a wide range of popular tasks and tools on the Internet today. In 2000, the second edition of a book version of this site, The Internet Users' Guide to Network Resource Tools was published by Addison-Wesley. A separate version will be submitted as an informational RFC in the Internet Engineering Task Force's FYI series. The Internet Users' Reference is revised on an ongoing basis by TERENA.Acknowledgments
