This book describes the ANSI C++ language in a succinct and concise form. A knowledge of C++ is not required in order to follow the explanations. They nevertheless lead in a steep learning curve from the introductory section to the critical aspects of the language which are outlined in the main section. Readers with experience of other programming languages will be familiar with this approach.

The main precept behind all the explanations is that of describing the individual language elements according to the way in which they are actually used, including their difficulties and particularities. In order to avoid interrupting a particular train of thought with syntax lists, the latter will be summarized in the reference section at the end of the book.

I would like to thank the revisers, Rüdiger Strasser, Ciske Busch, Martin Karmann and Dr. Michael Friedlinger for their support. My special thanks go to Dr. Bertram Pertzsch, whose valid comments helped bring the manuscript to fruition. 0201758792P10162001
