Are you looking for a concise book on Java programming? Well -- here it is, the Nitty Girtty of Java programming! The first section introducing the Java programming language is aimed at Java beginners. It starts with the Java syntax and explains how to implement object-oriented concepts such as classes and inheritance in Java. The second section provides a reference source for the language constructs and extremely powerful standard library classes. The final section is a collection of practical tips for using Java, enabling you to get to the heart of Java.
Let's get down to the Nitty Gritty of:
Nitty Gritty provides the most important facts that you will need to know to get up and running in new programming topics quickly and when you have become proficient you can use it as an on-going reference book for all the fundamentals.
Divided into 3 sections this book provides everything you need to know to get going and stay running:
Nitty-gritty: the basic and most important facts, the essential substance or details.
About the book
This book is aimed at people looking for a compact introduction to Java programming. It includes a compressed introduction to the Java language and its terms, a reference to the Java class libraries, and tips on the successful use of the language.
True to the "nitty-gritty" motto, the book will concentrate on the most important matters and offer assistance for their daily use. The focus is on practice, not on the theoretical background, so this book contains numerous examples, along with important information on the subjects of CORBA, Enterprise JavaBeans, Remote Method Invocation, servlets and multithreading, as well as an overview of UML symbols.
The book comprises three parts:The first three chapters will give you an overview of the basic concepts of the Java programming language and platform, some development environments, and the advantages of object-oriented programming. The second part (Chapters 4--10) will present Java syntax and the standard class libraries. It should be used as a reference when you are looking for a short introduction to the individual topics and a description of the most important classes, methods, and key words. In the final part (Chapters 11--13), you will find tips, information on which problems you can solve using which technologies, and how you can fine tune your applications.Past history
The author has worked for many years using C++ and since 1996 has been work-ing increasingly using Java. He was in overall charge of the development of sev-eral courses and style guides and, in the fall of 1999, published the text book Java Programming using IBM VisualAge. This book has been written as a response to the positive reactions of its readers and many enquiries.
Many sections have their roots in the VisualAge book, where step-by-step learning of the language and the development environment are at the fore. Nitty Gritty Java is rather more a practical introduction with tips and a reference for looking things up.
The text book accompanied the author through a turbulent phase both in Java and in his professional field. Sun published Version 1.3 of Java, which has already found its way into this book (as well as information on the upcoming Micro Ed-ition). Professionally, the author became self-employed during this time, as he took the step from managing an applications development department to founding the company of Hawlitzek IT Consulting. Thanks
I would like to give my warmest thanks to all of those who have contributed to the preparation of this book:
Firstly, I would like to thank my girlfriend Kirsten Literski for her valuable suggestions and for her great patience with me in the last few months, which she has provided for a second time. Again, I underestimated the effort required in writing a book. Thank you for your devotion and love.
I would particularly like to thank Wernher Bien for his work on the content, his many suggestions for improvements and his splendid commitment. Many thanks also to Tilmann Ochs for good documents and graphics. Naturally, my thanks also go to all of those who helped in the preparation of the VisualAge book, as well as the management of my former company ARS, who made it possible for me to write this book.
Most sincere thanks to the publishers Addison-Wesley. 0201758806P10162001
