About the book
This book is aimed at people looking for a compact introduction to Java programming. It includes a compressed introduction to the Java language and its terms, a reference to the Java class libraries, and tips on the successful use of the language.
True to the "nitty-gritty" motto, the book will concentrate on the most important matters and offer assistance for their daily use. The focus is on practice, not on the theoretical background, so this book contains numerous examples, along with important information on the subjects of CORBA, Enterprise JavaBeans, Remote Method Invocation, servlets and multithreading, as well as an overview of UML symbols.
The book comprises three parts:The first three chapters will give you an overview of the basic concepts of the Java programming language and platform, some development environments, and the advantages of object-oriented programming.The second part (Chapters 4--10) will present Java syntax and the standard class libraries. It should be used as a reference when you are looking for a short introduction to the individual topics and a description of the most important classes, methods, and key words. In the final part (Chapters 11--13), you will find tips, information on which problems you can solve using which technologies, and how you can fine tune your applications.Past history
The author has worked for many years using C++ and since 1996 has been work-ing increasingly using Java. He was in overall charge of the development of sev-eral courses and style guides and, in the fall of 1999, published the text book Java Programming using IBM VisualAge. This book has been written as a response to the positive reactions of its readers and many enquiries.
Many sections have their roots in the VisualAge book, where step-by-step learning of the language and the development environment are at the fore. Nitty Gritty Java is rather more a practical introduction with tips and a reference for looking things up.
The text book accompanied the author through a turbulent phase both in Java and in his professional field. Sun published Version 1.3 of Java, which has already found its way into this book (as well as information on the upcoming Micro Ed-ition). Professionally, the author became self-employed during this time, as he took the step from managing an applications development department to founding the company of Hawlitzek IT Consulting.Thanks
