About the Author
Elaine Cumming was director of the Albany Mental Health Research Unit of the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene and professor of sociology at the State University of New York at Albany. Her research into varying aspects of social deviance and social control has been conducted with the Psychiatric Services Branch of the Saskatchewan Department of Health, with Cornell University under a joint appointment. She is the author of Ego and Milieu: Theory and Practice of Environmental Therapy and Growing Old: The Process of Disengagement among others.
