The material in this book evolved from the attempts to prepare adults of an urban community for further study. It has been used both to learn and review arithmetic and algebra. The chapters were written so that students would be able to learn on their own as much as possible. There are many diagrams and sample problems. There are explanations of the rules of arithmetic and algebra as well as a presentation of several procedures for solving problems. Each section in chapter is followed by exercises. Practical word problems follow each major topic. These were included to facilitate self-learning. Each section also has a pretest and a post test that can be used for diagnostic purposes.
