Highlights of this new text

  • Provides a model for Intentional Theory Selection, which assists counselors and psychotherapists with the process of finding their own theoretical orientation.
  • Addresses specific strategies and activities for finding a theoretical orientation, allowing students to process their own thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about various theories (Ch. 3).
  • Presents the “Selective Theory Sorter,” a quiz that allows students to answer questions regarding their beliefs about people and the psychotherapy process.  Once it is completed, students receive a score that indicates the theories to which they are most drawn (Ch. 3).

Review:

"In the preface of their book, Duane Halbur and Kimberly Vess Halbur express the hope that readers will find their book both refreshing and meaningful.  By book's end, the authors make good on that modest hope and deliver much more.  Their treatment of theory development - the perennial challenge to every student counselor - is insightful, practical and thought-provoking."

~ Stephen G. Saiz, SUNY Plattsburgh in Counseling Today, January 2006
