Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, 177 pp, 10 ills. From the blurb - "Medieval manuscript fragments, particularly single folios that have survived war, fire, neglect or even wilful destruction, pose special problems for scholars as many have been incorrectly identified or never identified at all. It takes the kind of delicate study being made by Cora Lutz in Yale University's Beinecke Library to unlock the secrets of such fragments and examine them for what they can bring to our understanding of the attitudes prevalent in Medieval and Renaissance times. In 16 essays here, Dr. Lutz investigates the texts, histories, and natures of materials dating from the time of the Venerable Bede to early printed books. She explores fragments from manuscripts of great prestige in the early Middle Ages, one of which was copied in Bede's monastary during his lifetime; another which was part of a great Homilarium compiled by Paulus Diaconis at the request of Charlemagne. A second group of essays illustrates certain medieval values, among them the tenacious yearning for some tangible relic of Christ; and reflects changing attitudes-as does Nicole Oresme's Latin treatise On the Sphere, which in arguing for an International Date Line foreshadows Renaissance interest in geography. Renaissance scholarship dominates part three of the book, and a fourth is devoted to the Bohemian humanist and Churchman, Jan Dubravius. Two final essays discuss manuscripts copied from printed books, and the unusual invention of master printer Aldus Manutius that let him provide additional texts of an instructional or devotional nature within the main texts of his books."
