Supper is almost ready in the farmhouse kitchen but where is Suzie?

PreSchool-Grade 1-- One by one, the children go looking for Susie to fetch her to the supper table. And, one by one, they fail to return. Finally, an irate mother goes searching and finds her family admiring their cat's new kittens. This simple, friendly story, originally published in 1959 (Young Scott Bks., o.p.), is one that children will quickly be able to read themselves. Cook's prose, however, has more than its share of rhetorical questions: "What do you think of that?" and "Guess what she saw!" Scull's new illustrations are executed in shades of gray with bright yellow accents, which works fine for hay and hair, but not so successfully for milk and cows' horns. A book in which both the writing style and the illustrations seem dated. --Lee Bock, Brown County Pub . Libraries, Green Bay, WI
