This book presents the student with the statistical techniques he is likely to need in his field of study. It aims at giving him an understanding of the reasoning underlying these techniques, for without such an understanding the techniques must be learned by rote and hence soon evaporate. The methods covered are not peculiar to one field of application alone, but apply to all subjects in which statistics is used. In this third edition, the level of mathematical presentation has been kept the same as that of the second edition. The text has been reworked in accordance with the suggestions of students and teachers, and a chapter on nonparametric methods, used increasingly in all fields, has been added.
