Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos (illustrator). 1st. Douglas Bader was one of the legendry figures of the RAF in WWII. Late in 1931 as a young pilot he crashed his Bulldog fighter losing both legs. Fitted with artificial limbs he made a quick recovery, resumed flying and was found to be fully competant. However, a RAF medical board rejected him form service flying. As war clouds loomed in the late 1930s he resumed his efforts to rejoin the RAF, and was successful. He participated over Dunkerk, in the Battle of Britian and later became a Wing Commander and led several squadrons in sweeps over occupied Europe. In August 1941 he parachuted from his stricken Spitfire over France. The inspirational and often controversian Bader became a POW for the remainder of the war. He was a "bloody nuisance" to his German captors and joined other POW troublemakers in Colditz Castle. This top line biography of the fighter pilot with "tin legs" fully captures the character, determination, aggression and innovation of a man who continued to inspire, especially the disabled, after his war was over. 170 pages including index, 25 b/w photos. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, ditto text block, no inscriptions. Pictorial DJ (colour to front) unclipped and VG+. Seller Inventory # 003650
