From Publishers Weekly:
Humor and wisdom abound in this Norwegian folktale about two friends, Gunhild and Margit, who love a good argument. The one says her husband is as stupid as a troll; the other says, "Your husband is a genius compared to mine." So each agrees to make good her claim about her husband's imbecility. Gunhild convinces her husband that he's ill and dying, while Margit makes a suit for her mate by "spinning at an empty wheel." The funeral is not cause for grief, however, but tears of laughter, and the two ladies wonder attheir own stupidity for marrying such unsuitable husbands. Hall's adaptation of this old wives' tale is terse and to the point. Her illustrations reflect the mood of ridicule and triviality in stylized forms and color combinations; they conjure up images of folkloric costumes with florid, almost abstract patterns. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 1 Up An enjoyable telling of a Nor wegian folktale. Margit and Gunhild, best of friends who love to fight, argue about whose husband is more foolish. To settle the dispute, they decide on a competition. Gunhild tricks her hus band Lars into thinking that he is dying. Margit spins and weaves an invisible cloth to make a suit for her husband Svein. When Svein appears at Lars' ``funeral'' in his underwear (and invisi ble new suit), Lars sits up in the coffin and laughs. They all have a party in stead of a funeral. Bold, colorful illus trations in an exaggerated style give the tale much of its personality, against a background of European peasantry. The story and its presentation are in the true nature of folklore, designed to be universal and for any age to enjoy. Nancy A. Gifford, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.
