Excerpt: ... CHAP. IV. Of Indurations and Collections of Water in the Uterus and Ovaries. A J. forty two Years of Age, of a tender Constitution, though in the former Part of her Life very healthy, was in the Year 1755 delivered of her first Child without any Circumstance attending the Labour more than natural. From this Time (he became subject to some slight, though continued Indispositions, which seemed to proceed from a slow lurking Fever. This however did not affect her Constitution so as to prevent her daily Attempts for a Subsistence, which the Meanness of her Circumstances necessarily required, 'till November 1759, when, following the Occupation of a Washerwoman, and heaving a Weight beyond her Strength,. she hurt her Side,. from whence ensued. a troublesome Pain in the right Iliac Region, which, though at first trifling, gradually encreased, attended with frequent Nauseas and Vomitings. For this various Remedies were applied. with little Effect. In this Condition she was situated at the Beginning of the Year 1760, when, upon attempting to remove a Hogshead, a Substance as big as a Tennis Ball, and as she expressed it like Gristle, was discharged per vaginam.. From this however she found no Relief; but, on the contrary, her Pains became quite violent, and a Tumour, which had some Time appeared in the right Iliac Region, encreased considerably. Her Her Menses returned periodically every three Weeks, and to an immense Quantity, 'till two Months before her Decease,. when they entirely disappeared.
