Excerpt: ... EPILOGUE. THE LETTER WITHOUT A SIGNATURE. WITH this dramatic revelation of the name which he had withheld till now, the Ambassador rose impressively to his feet, and, after giving me a glance as if he would have said--Well, my friend, what do you think of that?--walked across to the window and drew up the blind. So absorbed had I been in this long relation that the end came on me like a shock I looked around, and saw the grey tints of dawn stealing into the room and cooling down the feverish glitter of the electric lights. I consulted my watch. I had been listening to the Ambassador for seven hours. It is true that he had not been speaking the whole of that time. The narrative which I have endeavoured to reproduce without a break had been interrupted at many points by questions on my part, to which his Excellency had not always vouchsafed a reply. Moreover, even the interest of the story he was telling had not caused my host to be forgetful of the claims of hospitality, and he had paid more than one visit to that little cellaret, disguised as a bookcase, which is so well known to the frequenters of the house in the Champs Elysees. Nevertheless I had been as it were transported into a different atmosphere during these hours, and I was not prepared to return all at once to everyday life. The Ambassador adjusted the blind to his satisfaction, and returned to me. "I fear I have detained you to a very unreasonable hour by this story, which you have no doubt found exceedingly tedious," he remarked. Was there a hint contained in these words?
