Lulu and the Flying Babies

Posy Simmonds is the author of Gemma Bovery, Baker Cat, and Tamara Drewe, winner of the Grand Prix 2009 de la Critique Bande Dessiné. Gemma Bovery and Tamara Drewe have been made into feature films.
PreSchool-Grade 2 The many children who feel that a trip to an art museum is a form of torture will sympathize with Lulu, who has to forgo playing in the snowy park to accompany her father and baby brother to a museum. She sulks, so her father leaves her on a bench to wait for him. Suddenly, two cherubs desert their respective pedestal and canvas and take her flying through the paintings in the museum. They play in the land and sea, interact with painted characters, and even eat fruit from a still life. At last, frightened by a painting of scary woods, she and the cherubs seek the information clerk's aid to return to their respective parents. Simmonds uses the story-board technique employed in her earlier Fred (Knopf, 1987). Her comic characters and spare use of words will appeal to non-readers and beginning independent readers. While Lulu's story is only mildly amusing, it has plenty of child appeal, and both parents and teachers will find it a good choice to read along with Laurene Krasny Brown and Marc Brown's Visiting the Art Museum (Dutton, 1986) and Miriam Cohen's Lost in the Museum (Greenwillow, 1979) when preparing children for trips to an art museum.
