About the Author:
Michael Moorcock has written more than eighty books, fiction and non-fiction, including The Cornelius Quartet, Gloriana, Mother London and the legendary Pyat Quartet: Byzantium Endures, The Laughter of Carthage, Jerusalem Commands and The Vengeance of Rome. He is also the author of The Condition of Muzak which won the Guardian Fiction Prize, and Mother London, which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize. He lives in France and Texas.
Review:
"[There are] those of us who have buttonholed strangers on the Underground and raved about Moorcock's masterpieces Byzantium Endures and The Laughter of Carthage" * Sunday Telegraph * "This is a rich, ambitious and erudite book" * Guardian * "His is the grand, messy flux itself, in all its heroic vulgarity, its unquenchable optimism, its enthusiasm for the inexhaustible variousness of things. Posterity will certainly give him that due place in English literature" -- Angela Carter * Guardian *

Book Description Original Wraps. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, as Issued. First UK Paperback Edition. First impression of the first paperback edition - issued as part of a uniform set by Cape - originally published in hardback by Secker & Warburg in 1984. Second of the Pyat quartet of novels. ***Near fine in colour illustrated wrappers with integral folding flaps. Spine tight. Pages slightly browned. Pages clean. No inscriptions. No tears. Front and rear wrappers and spine bright. ***216 mm x 136 mm. 602 pages. *** 'The Laughter of Carthage is the second of the Pyat novels. Sustained by a vision of a rational modern Utopia yet violently denying his own heritage, 'Colonel' Pyat escapes the chaotic horrors of the Russian civil war only to encounter more predators afloat and ashore. Once in 'Tsargrad' he finds himself caught up in the convolutions of Turkish revolutionary politics and when he again escapes with his new love, a teenage Roumanian whore - it is to find himself amongst te prototype fascists of Rome.' (Quote from inside front flap of wrapper blurb). ***'This is a rich, ambitious and erudite book. If one purpose of fiction is to lead us into different worlds and, as Virginia Woolf says, to make of them "some kind of whole", then Michael Moorcock succeeds brilliantly.' [Carolyn Slaughter - Guardian - review quote about The Laughter of Carthage from rear wrapper blurb] ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
