In these frank and often devastating conversations Nelson Algren reveals himself with all the gruff humor, deflating insight, honesty, and critical brilliance that marked his career. Prodded by H. E. F. Donohue, Algren discusses everything from his childhood to his compulsion to write to his relationship with Simone de Beauvoir. Algren may be best known for The Man with the Golden Arm, a 1949 novel that won the National Book Award and was adapted as the 1955 film of the same name. According to Harold Augenbraum, 'in the late 1940s and early 1950s he was one of the best known literary writers in America'. He also wrote 'Walk on the Wildside', which much later inspired the title of the Lou Reed song. In the last years of his life, the work that Ernest Hemingway once said "beat Dostoyevsky" was so undervalued that much of it was out of print. Size: 140mm x 215mm. Book. Seller Inventory # 022066
