While questions of scientific methodology have occupied several generations of Anglo-American philosophers, no one has undertaken to analyze and present in detail the general traits of a dialectical method. In START POINT, Robert Cumming attempts this formidable task. Focusing on the problem of where and how a philosopher starts out, Cumming draws his illustrations primarily from Hegel, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Sartre, and Merleau-Ponty. In the course of his analysis, Cumming considers the status of "everyday" experience; the way experience is transformed by resort to literary devices; the function of stages in a dialectical development; the characteristics of "conversion" as the crucial stage in an existential dialectic; and the problem of communication posed by the demand that the individual appropriate his experience, so that it becomes authentically his own. Insofar as it presents a fresh interpretation of the individual, STARTING POINT is a sequel to Cumming's attempt in HUMAN NATURE AND HISTORY to discriminate the classical, utilitarian, historicist, and romantic conceptions of the individual, as they have emerged during the history of political thought. Robert Denoon Cumming (1916 - 2004) was a Canadian-American philosopher and historian of twentieth-century Continental philosophy, especially phenomenology. He taught at Columbia University from 1948 to 1985, when he retired as Frederick E. Woodbridge professor emeritus of philosophy.
