Greenberg is best known for his art reviews in The Nation and his essays in Partisan Review, especially the much-reprinted "Avant-Garde and Kitsch." The present volumes include over 200 essays as they originally appeared in these and other journals such as Commentary and Horizon . (Many of these essays were revised, sometimes extensively; the editor notes when a later version of an essay exists.) Topics considered are as diverse as Bertolt Brecht, the Victorian novel, Jackson Pollock, and the Jewish joke, and while the results are sometimes ephemeral, often they are noteworthy. Arranged chronologically, the essays provide an insightful analysis of modern culture and a clear record of Greenberg's critical growth. Two forthcoming volumes, covering 1950-69, will complete the record.
