About the Author
Donald G. Mathews is professor of history at the University of North Carolina. He is the author ofSlavery and Methodism: A Chapter in American Morality 1780-1844 and Agitation for Freedom: The Abolitionists as well as numerous scholarly articles.Religion in the Old South was nominated for a National Religious Book Award in 1977.
